Complications after surgical resection of a brain tumor
AddThis Social Bookmark Button

This patient suffered many complications after surgical resection of a brain tumor, including DVT of the right leg which required fasciotomy X 4. The patient was admitted to home care after several months in the hospital and rehabilitation center. Of great concern was that the patient’s chemotherapy was on hold until the leg wounds were healed. Initial treatment was Xeroform gauze covered with an island dressing and changed 3 times a week.

The dressings were often reinforced with multiple ABD pads and extra tape to contain the drainage. The periwound skin became increasingly irritated and damaged by the tape. New wound care orders were obtained for an open cell foam dressing secured with a transparent film dressing also changed 3 times a week. This dressing succeeded in containing the drainage and allowing the periwound skin to heal. After 4 weeks of new wound care the patient was discharged from home care and was able to begin chemotherapy the next week
